California phlebotomy certificates now renew every year

Starting January 1, 2026, California's Laboratory Field Services moved newly issued and renewed licenses and certificates, including phlebotomy certificates, to a one-year renewal period. Certified phlebotomists need 3 continuing education units completed within the past 12 months.

California's Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services (LFS) certifies phlebotomists. LFS announced that starting January 1, 2026, all newly issued and renewed licenses and certificates move to a one-year renewal period.

What certified phlebotomists need to do

  • Renew every year instead of on the old cycle.
  • Complete 3 continuing education (CE) units for each renewal, with all courses completed within the past 12 months.
