The short answer

Sites usually ask for TB screening, proof of vaccinations, a background check, a CPR or BLS card and required training records. CDC recommends that health care personnel be screened for TB when they start and be up to date on COVID-19, chickenpox, flu, hepatitis B, meningococcal, MMR and Tdap or Td vaccines. Your school and site decide the exact list.

Your school and each clinical site set their own requirements, and they can differ. Treat this as a guide to what to expect, then follow your program's list exactly.

TB screening

CDC recommends that all U.S. health care personnel be screened for tuberculosis when they start. Screening includes:

  • an individual TB risk assessment
  • a TB symptom evaluation
  • a TB test (a blood test or a skin test)
  • further evaluation if needed

Vaccinations

CDC says health care workers should be up to date on:

  • COVID-19
  • chickenpox (varicella)
  • flu
  • hepatitis B
  • meningococcal
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • Tdap or Td

Schools and sites decide which records they require and what counts as proof (vaccination records or lab results showing immunity). Questions about your own health and vaccines belong with your health care provider.

Other common requirements

  • Background check, and sometimes a drug screen
  • CPR or Basic Life Support card
  • Training records, often HIPAA privacy and bloodborne pathogens (OSHA requires bloodborne pathogens training for workers who may be exposed to blood)
  • Photo ID and your student badge

Stay organized

Keep digital copies of everything in one folder, with expiration dates. Flu vaccines and some certifications expire every year, and you'll need these records again when you start working.
