Why flexibility matters in dentistry
A hygienist out sick can empty a day's schedule. BLS projects dental hygienist jobs will grow 8% and dental assistant jobs 7.4% from 2025 to 2035, so competition for good people isn't going away.
Flexible options
- On-demand professionals: bring in a licensed hygienist or a dental assistant for a day or a week.
- A regular bench: a few trusted professionals who know your office and fill in when needed.
- Hybrid teams: a core staff plus flexible help for busy seasons and extended hours.
Set it up well
- Know your needs: which roles, which days, which procedures.
- Write simple protocols: where things are, your charting system, how the doctor likes to work.
- Check credentials: every state requires dental hygienists to be licensed, and states that allow assistants to do expanded duties require a license, registration or certification. Check your state dental board's lookup.
- Welcome people: a short orientation makes the day go better for everyone, including patients.
